Do You Need a Visitor Visa?

Visa Waiver Countries (No Visa Required)

Citizens of approximately 60 countries can enter New Zealand visa-free. If you're from one of these countries, you can arrive and stay up to 6 months without a visa. You just need a valid passport.

Visitor Visa Required

Citizens of countries not on the visa waiver list need to apply for a Visitor Visa before arriving in New Zealand. This includes many Asian, African, Middle Eastern, and South American countries.

Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA)

Citizens of select countries (including UK, USA, Canada, Australia) can apply for a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) instead of a traditional visitor visa. The NZeTA is easier to obtain and process faster online.

The NZeTA costs $145 USD and is valid for 2 years, allowing multiple 3-month stays. Most applications are approved instantly online.

Eligibility Requirements

• • Good health: Cannot have certain infectious diseases
• • Good character: No serious criminal convictions
• • No fraud history: No history of visa fraud or immigration violations

Financial Requirements

You must demonstrate you have sufficient funds to support yourself during your stay. The amount depends on your visit duration:

How to Apply for a Visitor Visa

Step 1: Check if You Need a Visa

First, confirm whether your nationality requires a visitor visa or if you qualify for visa-free entry or NZeTA. Visit the Immigration New Zealand website and search by your nationality.

Step 2: Gather Required Documents

Collect the following documents before applying:

Most visitor visa applications are made online through the Immigration New Zealand website. The application takes 15-30 minutes to complete. If applying offline, you'll need to mail documents to an Immigration NZ office or visa application center.

Step 4: Pay Application Fee (if applicable)

Many nationalities pay no visitor visa fee. Others pay approximately NZD $80-140 depending on nationality. The NZeTA costs $145 USD online. Payment is by credit or debit card.

Step 5: Wait for Decision

NZeTA applications are usually approved instantly. Visitor visa applications typically take 2-8 weeks. You'll receive notification by email when your application is approved or if additional information is needed.

Step 6: Receive Your Visa

Once approved, your visa is electronically linked to your passport. No physical visa label is needed. Simply show your passport at immigration when arriving in New Zealand.

How Long Can You Stay?

The standard visitor visa allows stays of up to 6 months. However, the actual duration granted depends on:
